かたちが、しゃべる。
Iceface Onomatoi は、描いた「かたち」から
まだ意味を持たない言葉 —— シニフィアン —— を生み出して発声する楽器です。
丸くて大きな絵はぼってりと低く、尖って細かい絵はちくちくと鋭く喋ります。
Voice(声): PuppeTwin

Shapes that speak.
Iceface Onomatoi is an instrument that turns the shapes you draw
into spoken words that mean nothing yet — pure signifiers.
A big round blob speaks low and soft; a small spiky scribble chatters bright and sharp.
Voice: PuppeTwin
About sound symbolism
You may know the bouba/kiki effect: shown a round shape and a spiky one and asked
which is bouba and which is kiki,
people across languages overwhelmingly call the round one bouba
(Ramachandran & Hubbard 2001; the original pair was Köhler's
maluma / takete, 1929). Sound and shape are not arbitrarily
related — this is sound symbolism. Japanese is exceptionally rich in such words
(onomatopoeia / ideophones: fuwa-fuwa fluffy, gotsu-gotsu rugged,
kira-kira sparkling…). Onomatoi runs the phenomenon in reverse:
it synthesizes a word that sounds like your shape.
How it works — reading a shape as both meaning and mouth
Onomatoi reads a drawn shape both as a semantic impression and as the mouth
that would pronounce it, and speaks it as an invented, Japanese-like word.
Semantics of shape — four axes
What kind of thing does this shape look like?
| Axis | What it reads from the shape | Effect on sound |
size | bounding-box scale | big → low heavy voice, voiced consonants g/b |
sharp | sharpness of corners | spiky → plosives/affricates k/t/ch; blunt → m/w or bare vowels |
texture | folds and wiggliness | rough → more morae, reduplication (kira-kira type), geminate Q |
bright | vertical position on canvas | high → brighter voice; low → darker |
Shape of the mouth — two articulatory axes
If you were to trace this shape with your mouth, what mouth would it be?
| Axis | What it reads from the shape | Effect on sound |
round | a wide horizontal line ↔ a small closed circle | wide → lips spread, i; small circle → lips pursed, u |
open | how large and enclosed the shape is | big circle → wide-open a; thin line → closed mouth |
The first four read what the shape means; the last two read what mouth it
would take to say it. A circle → a, a horizontal bar → i,
a small circle → u, a tilted ellipse → e (either direction of tilt),
a slightly tall circle → o —
vowels are chosen by the mouth.
Draw an open arc (shapes like ⊃⊂∩∪) and it becomes a minimal
"vowel + ん" word; draw an open angle (shapes like <>∧∨) and it
becomes a minimal "consonant + ん" word — either way, regardless of orientation.
These six axes are matched against sound-symbolic bias tables for every consonant and
vowel, and a Japanese-style mora sequence (CV, bare vowel, geminate Q,
moraic nasal N) is selected.
The same drawing always yields the same word (deterministic generation) —
your shape gets, in effect, named.
How to use
- Draw — one stroke on the canvas speaks immediately. ✕ Eraser resets
- PLAY — repeats the last utterance exactly, as many times as you like
- TUNE sliders — drive the six axes directly
- Presets — bouba/kiki/maluma/takete (the classics of sound-symbolism
research) plus six Japanese onomatopoeia. First tap speaks the canonical word;
later taps improvise variations
- LOG — tap any past word to replay it exactly
About this web version
Onomatoi is the simplified web edition of the iPad/Mac app
Onomatoi (formerly Iceface PTS, Phonosymbolic Topology Synthesizer), which adds
pitch contours, melody (warabe-uta) modes and a multi-stroke composing mode.
The voice is PuppeTwin, a bank of 127 recorded samples.
Alongside the port from the core engine (shaping into real-sounding onomatopoeia forms,
sustained long vowels, continuation-ん, and vowel glides like kai/kou), this web
version keeps in step with ongoing refinements to the core: choosing vowels from the shape
of the mouth (including tilted ellipses → e and slightly-tall circles → o),
open arcs/angles becoming minimal "vowel/consonant + ん" words, and adjustments to glides
and to how neighboring morae stay easy to say.
The version through 2026-06-22 is preserved here.
