かたちが、しゃべる。
Iceface Onomatopian は、描いた「かたち」から
まだ意味を持たない言葉 —— シニフィアン —— を生み出して発声する楽器です。
丸くて大きな絵はぼってりと低く、尖って細かい絵はちくちくと鋭く喋ります。
Voice(声): PuppeTwin
- プリセット — bouba/kiki/maluma/takete (音象徴研究の古典) +
日本語オノマトペ 6 種。初回タップは正確な発音、2 回目以降は変奏
- ROMAJI 直接入力 — 好きなモーラ列を発声 (例:
cha pu cha pu)
- LOG — 過去の語をタップでそのまま再生

Shapes that speak.
Iceface Onomatopian is an instrument that turns the shapes you draw
into spoken words that mean nothing yet — pure signifiers.
A big round blob speaks low and soft; a small spiky scribble chatters bright and sharp.
Voice: PuppeTwin
About sound symbolism
You may know the bouba/kiki effect: shown a round shape and a spiky one and asked
which is bouba and which is kiki,
people across languages overwhelmingly call the round one bouba
(Ramachandran & Hubbard 2001; the original pair was Köhler's
maluma / takete, 1929). Sound and shape are not arbitrarily
related — this is sound symbolism. Japanese is exceptionally rich in such words
(onomatopoeia / ideophones: fuwa-fuwa fluffy, gotsu-gotsu rugged,
kira-kira sparkling…). Onomatopian runs the phenomenon in reverse:
it synthesizes a word that sounds like your shape.
How it works — four axes
From a single stroke, four axes are extracted:
| Axis | What it reads from the shape | Effect on sound |
size | bounding-box scale | big → heavy vowels a/o, voiced consonants g/b |
sharp | sharpness of corners | spiky → plosives/affricates k/t/ch; blunt → m/w or bare vowels |
texture | folds and wiggliness | rough → more morae, reduplication (kira-kira type), geminate Q |
bright | vertical position on canvas | high (bright) → vowels i/e; low (dark) → o/u |
The axis vector is matched against sound-symbolic bias tables for every consonant and
vowel, and a Japanese-style mora sequence (CV, bare vowel, geminate Q,
moraic nasal N) is sampled probabilistically.
The same drawing always yields the same word (deterministic generation) —
your shape gets, in effect, named.
How to use
- Draw — one stroke on the canvas speaks immediately. ✕ Eraser resets
- PLAY — repeats the last utterance exactly, as many times as you like
- TUNE sliders — drive the four axes directly
- Presets — bouba/kiki/maluma/takete (the classics of sound-symbolism
research) plus six Japanese onomatopoeia. First tap speaks the canonical word;
later taps improvise variations
- ROMAJI input — speak any mora sequence (e.g.
cha pu cha pu)
- LOG — tap any past word to replay it exactly
